Ecological Board
Ecological board, commonly known as melamine-impregnated paper-faced engineered wood panel, is a double-sided, melamine-impregnated paper-faced decorative board with a core of blockboard (large core board), hot-pressed on both sides. In a broader sense, the core material can also be plywood, particleboard, or MDF. The boards come with wood grain, solid color, or stone grain finishes from the factory, eliminating the need for on-site painting and reducing paint pollution. It is the most commonly used board for on-site cabinet construction in home decoration. Key distinctions: Compared to MDF, ecological board has a solid wood strip core, resulting in stronger nail-holding power and less flaking. Compared to carbon crystal board and SPC stone crystal wall panel, which are wood-based materials with weaker moisture resistance, ecological board is not fire-resistant (not Class A) compared to calcium silicate board and damping sound insulation board. It differs from engineered wood panels, which often use post-heat-transfer wood veneer, while ecological board has a melamine-impregnated paper-faced, hot-pressed, melamine-impregnated surface.

PRODUCT DETAILS
Multi-layer structure of boards
1. Melamine-impregnated paper (surface layer): Decorative paper impregnated with resin, cured by high-temperature hot pressing, wear-resistant, stain-resistant, scratch-resistant, with its own patterned texture, ready to use without paint.
2. Veneer cushioning layer: Thin wood veneer, connecting the surface paper to the inner core material, improving the flatness of the board surface and preventing cracking of the surface layer.
3. Solid wood strip spliced core layer (mainstream plywood core): Composed of multiple solid wood squares tightly spliced together, it is the core skeleton of the ecological board, determining the board's nail-holding power and load-bearing capacity; common core materials are cedar, Malacca wood, and lauan wood.
4. Back balancing surface layer: The reverse side is also covered with impregnated paper to balance the internal stress of the board and reduce bending deformation.
Production process flow
Solid wood raw material cutting and processing → Wood strip screening and splicing into core board → Thin wood veneer pasted on both sides of the core board → Impregnated paper laid on both sides → High temperature and high pressure hot pressing for one-piece molding → Constant temperature tempering to eliminate stress in the board → Precision sanding of the board surface → Cutting to length → Quality inspection of wear resistance, formaldehyde, and bonding strength → Film coating protection → Packaging and warehousing
Core performance characteristics
✅ Key Advantages
1. Finished, Paint-Free Surface: Comes with a decorative finish, eliminating the need for on-site painting, reducing paint odor, shortening construction time, and allowing for immediate use.
2. Excellent Nail Holding Power: Solid wood core ensures strong grip on screws, hinges, and drawer slides, preventing wardrobe and bookcase hardware from loosening or falling off.
3. Rich Colors and Patterns: Available in wood grain, solid colors, fabric textures, and stone textures, with various textures including skin-like and matte finishes to suit diverse home décor styles.
4. Easy Processing: On-site sawing, drilling, and grooving by carpenters facilitate convenient processing, suitable for on-site custom cabinetry.
5. High-Standard Environmental Rating Available: High-quality products can reach ENF and E0 standards, using less glue compared to MDF.
6. Wear-Resistant and Stain-Resistant Surface: The melamine finish resists daily friction, making it easy to wipe clean of coffee and oil stains.
⚠️ Disadvantages
1. Moderate Moisture Resistance: The wood-based substrate is prone to swelling and warping when exposed to moisture, making it unsuitable for long-term use in damp areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
2. Fire rating B1/B2, failing to meet Class A non-combustible standards, limiting its application in commercial fire protection projects.
3. Significant differences in core board quality: Low-priced boards have large gaps and numerous voids in the internal wood strips, making them prone to warping and sagging over long-term use.
4. Weak carving capabilities: Unsuitable for deep carving and complex milling; its shaping and processing capabilities are inferior to MDF.
5. High edge banding requirements: Exposed cut surfaces, if not properly edge-banded, easily absorb moisture and release formaldehyde.
6. Long door panels are prone to slight warping; cabinet doors exceeding 1.8 meters in height require straighteners.
Applicable Scenarios
✅ Recommended Use Scenarios
1. Home Decoration: Wardrobes, shoe cabinets, bookcases, tatami mats, TV cabinets (both cabinet bodies and doors)
2. Interior Decoration: Feature wall panels, interior partitions, window sill cabinets, balcony dry area storage cabinets
3. Commercial Decoration: Office filing cabinets, shop display cabinets, hotel room cabinets
❌ Not Recommended Scenarios
Bathroom shower areas, wet areas in kitchens, high-humidity basement environments, exterior walls, Class A fire-resistant projects, environments subject to long-term water immersion.
Key Points for Selection and Identification
1. Check the core: Prioritize boards with dense internal wood strips, small gaps, and no voids or bark impurities; inferior boards with many voids are prone to warping.
2. Differentiate the core material: Fir core is light and has a mild odor; Malacca core is flat and most commonly used in home decoration; Lauan core has high density and stronger load-bearing capacity.
3. Check the environmental protection test report; prioritize ENF grade for home decoration, and reject low-priced boards without test reports.
4. Check the veneer layer: The surface texture is clear, wear-resistant, and free of pits and scratches; inferior paper is prone to fading and peeling.
5. Test nail holding power: When screws are screwed in, the board should not easily crack, and the wood chips should be dense after being pulled out.
6. Choose the thickness as needed: 18mm for the main frame of the cabinet, 15mm for the shelves, and 9mm for the back panel.
Relevant Tips for Foreign Trade Export
1. Ecological boards belong to wood-based engineered wood products. Export to the EU requires EUDR timber traceability declaration; export to the US requires compliance with the Lacey Act.
2. Export Testing Items: Formaldehyde emission, surface abrasion resistance test, static bending strength, bonding strength, and flame retardancy test.
3. Overseas Application: Suitable for overseas indoor furniture, cabinet, and display case manufacturing.
4. Packaging and Transportation: The edges and corners of the boards are easily damaged; corner protectors, film coating, and pallet packaging are used for comprehensive moisture protection.
Installation and Usage Precautions
1. Keep the storage environment dry, stack on a raised platform, and strictly prohibit direct contact with the ground to prevent moisture absorption.
2. Exposed cut edges must be sealed after cutting to prevent the boards from absorbing moisture and releasing formaldehyde.
3. For cabinet doors taller than 1.8 meters, it is recommended to install a straightener to reduce door panel bending and deformation.
4. Not suitable for areas with continuous humidity. For balcony cabinets, it is recommended to allow ventilation to reduce the impact of temperature and humidity differences.
5. Not suitable for complex carvings or curved shapes; for irregular shapes, MDF or curved board are preferred.
